Virginia and the Carolinas are close-ish to Mass, and in the summer they are beautiful. Might be worth looking up some of the touristy destinations there.
If you don't mind staying IN Florida, I always suggest the Keys. You can still vacay together, but things can be as relaxed or as exciting as you choose to make them, so you could chill out on the beach while they hit all the attractions, and there is a lively night life if that's anyone's thing, you and dad could have a drink right next door at some swinging little pub while little one sleeps locked up safe in the hotel. Plus some cool haunted tourism, like Robert the Creepy Doll! If you're really adventurous you can hit up tours of the Everglades!
