Feb. 15th, 2013 10:49 amLast night was epic as far as my son's behavior goes. You remember I posted about the tantrum in Target that resulted in no cupcakes. I had bought another dessert which he had, and my husband had dinner when he got home, and then we did presents. I was all excited because I bought him a Star Wars dish set that he'd been asking for.
He took it out of the bag, looked at it and set it aside. After he took out the candies and the card he said "Is there anything else for me?" I told him no, and he started to cry. "You should have gotten me something better!"
I was shocked. I felt like I'd been stabbed in the heart. True, he doesn't know the finer points of being gracious when you receive a gift you don't like. But I was so surprised. He had asked me to buy this set for like, a week. He finally stopped asking. I thought he'd be so happy to get it, but apparently he'd moved on.
I tried to tell him he shouldn't say things like that, that Valentine's day is not a huge present day like your birthday or Christmas. And this is exactly why I stopped buying him presents except on special occasions. He has come to expect to be showered with presents on every holiday. He wants to do a party for every holiday. He wants to invite his class and his family and his friends and make a big deal out of presents and that is just not the kind of person I want to raise. I'm all for the celebrating, but he has become way too obsessed with presents. I know he's just a kid. I know it shouldn't devastate me like it has. But it did.
