You could have told her anything you wanted, but just remember you weren't obligated to tell her anything, either. I think it's best to be polite to people so long as they aren't being hurtful etc. but it's a courtesy to make small talk, and sometimes it's beyond our powers at the moment. As long as you smile and nod most people don't feel offended!
