Jun. 27th, 2013 08:56 am Today's the last day of kindergarten. It's affecting me more than I thought it would, like, this morning when I hugged him it occurred to me that I'd never hug my kindergartner again. But then, it's kind of like that every day, isn't it? They'll never be the same again, especially at this age when they're learning and growing so fast.
I get worried that the other shoe is going to drop soon. Right now he loves learning. He doesn't need to be prompted to read or write his numbers or do his activity book. But just like one day he loves cheeseburgers and the next day he doesn't, what if one day he decides he hates school? What if everything I've been taking for granted suddenly changes? How do we make learning fun and something he wants to do and continue to do that as the work gets harder and the expectations get bigger?
One day at a time, I guess. I couldn't believe the amount of summer work they want him to do. They sent home a math packet, a list of about 6 recommended books plus one required, recommended a big workbook that is supposed to be done over 3 months but he only has 2 months, and I'm sure I'll get more today. I'm glad he isn't behind the 8 ball or I'd feel more pressured to get all this done so he's up to speed. They say kids forget a lot over the summer, especially after K when they learn so much.
Tonight we're taking him out to dinner and we bought him a game called Skylanders where you buy the figures and they connect to your xbox 360 or wii and you play the character you chose. It looks pretty neat.
Oh, and he's coming home at noon. I think it's going to rain, so we'll probably watch a movie. I was going to take him out for ice cream but it doesn't look like a good day for that.
