becomingkate Well, flu shot fail. MA retail locations will not vax anyone under 18. So I asked to get mine anyway and they said they weren't sure if the insurance would cover it. I failed to ask how much that would be, but now upon googling it it looks like it's $30 which is probably worth it just so I don't have to make a dr. appt. So I guess it's back to Walgreen's tomorrow. My son lucked out, but I plan on asking his doctor to give him one at his annual doctor's visit on Friday. Poor kid. I had to drag him out of the house just to get him to Walgreen's and now he's going to be surprised with it on Friday. He didn't freak out about shots until he turned 5. When he found out he was getting shots he hid under the table and had to be dragged out. So now I struggle with whether to prepare him in advance or just spring it on him.
In good news, I found makeup that matches my skin tone!
You don't understand. I'm 33 and I have always struggled with finding makeup that matches me. I'm very pale but I have red undertones. I could rarely find anything that wasn't too dark. I go through makeup phases because I find something I think will work, even tried stuff on at makeup counters that looks fine in the store, and I get it home and it's awful. Bare Minerals, Clinique, store brands, I tried them all.
The other day I saw a commercial for L'Oreal's nearly naked makeup. Emma Stone may have swayed me. I just love her and her coloring is like mine (although I'm still not entirely sure if she's really a redhead or not, and either way, it's much darker red than mine. Her blonde look is closer to my strawberry blonde). Anyway her skin is pale like mine, so, false advertising or not, when she told me this makeup matches her skin I believed her and two days later I was buying the makeup. It works! Squee!
Now I just need someone to teach me how to put on eyeliner and shadow. Seriously. I am that much of a makeup newbie. Apparently my mother didn't think it important to teach me. Not only did I have gunky spider-lashes for ages before she at least taught me how to properly do mascara, but I've walked around wearing at the very most, mascara, eyebrow pencil and a little blush and foundation (when I happened to have some that I didn't notice was the wrong shade yet, ha ha)
When I was a teenager I could get away with that. I have never figured out how to make eyeliner and all that look natural on someone like me with very light skin and light hair, anyway. But now that I'm overweight I feel like I've not got much going for me if I don't wear a little makeup.
So we'll settle into the foundation and powder routine for a while and maybe someday Emma Stone will be in a commercial for some eyeliner and shadow that is just right for her and she'll save the day again.

Date: 2013-01-16 11:53 pm (UTC)With a pale skin tone, I've found that a medium tone brown works wonders as a liner. And browns are a fairly safe color to start experimenting on shadows with.
For shadows, darkest shade in the crease, medium shade on the lid itself, and the lightest between the eyebrows and the lid. If you're feeling fancy, the medium shade can be put at the outer corner of the light area, and blended inward with a dry fingertip to mix with the light shade and add a bit of extra depth to the color. This takes a little bit of practice, though, so I'd suggest the first few times, not when you need to go into public.
A good rule of thumb when checking out a new shadow color is to put it next to the back of your hand. Does the color combination make you recoil, or go, Hmmm?
