We're looking into summer vacations, and hello, expensive. We were considering a Disney cruise but because we live in Massachusetts we'd have to travel to Florida to catch the boat. Planes are expensive, driving takes too long, the train is cheaper but is also very long. Over 24 hours sitting on a train with a 6 year old does not sound like a pleasant way to start and end a vacation.
So what do we want to do? I don't know. Here is where you come in, dear readers. I hope you'll be able to give me some fun ideas for a family with a 6 year old boy. Or help me justify the cost and the travel for the Disney cruise.
I'm thinking if we go Disney, we do the cruise instead of the World, because you get to stay in one place on the boat, not walk all around and get tired and cranky and hungry and hot, and from what I hear they take very good care of your kids and the grown ups get to have fun too.
I really wouldn't mind doing something simple for a couple days, but we've already gone to NYC twice and my husband doesn't want to go again yet, even though it's really fun and there are lots of kid friendly things to do and you can pick and choose how much you want to walk around and where you want to go. And there really isn't much that's fun in New England unless you like skiing or hiking or some other outdoorsy thing, which I don't, unless the outdoorsy thing is lying on the beach with a drink in my hand. Actually no, sun isn't good for me. Make that lying next to the indoor pool with a drink in my hand.
There's a lot going on with NKOTB this spring and summer and I of course want to go to at least one show or event depending on what all is going on. There's some "big announcement" when they're going to be on The View on the 22nd which will probably be an album release date or a single or tour announcement or some combination of the three. I kind of can't stand The View but I will take one for the team and watch it.
SO yes while I'd like to plan my summer around NKOTB events I do have a family who wants to actually go on a vacation WITH me this year. Sigh.

Date: 2013-01-16 02:14 am (UTC)We took an (admittedly) shorter train ride from The Cities to Chicago once upon a time. The only drawback I remember is that they only had overpriced Coke in cans, that was FLAT IN 60 SECONDS! thanks to the vibration of the cars.

Then there's Magic Mountain

And then good old Hopewell Rocks where I did manage to visit.
I found Moncton to be easy going, unhurried, easy on the pocketbook and generally nice.
So there would be things to keep the kiddo interested depending on the length of stay in each port.
Cruise Line: Carnival Cruise Lines Cruise Ship: Carnival Glory Departing From: Boston, Massachusetts
Departure Port: Boston, Massachusetts
Number of Nights: 7
Ports of Call:
Boston, Massachusetts | Portland, Maine | Saint John, New Brunswick | Halifax, Nova Scotia | Sydney, Nova Scotia
I've never been on a cruise so there's a lot of things I don't understand like the concept of port. Do you stay on the ship? Do they kick ya off? Is it a day or 3? I dunno.
But I do know that Moncton was rather nice and seemed to have a lot of pleasant tourism adventures.
Maybe the 6 year old can get out a map before hand and plan with you things to do in each port so there'd be something to look forward to.

Pity about the length of travel about driving: San Antonio down here in Texas is frigging awesome. You have the Alamo, Sea World and NASA right near each other. Plus a perfect replica of the Forbidden City of China.

Date: 2013-01-16 04:19 am (UTC)The nkotb cruises, when you'd get to a place where the boat was stopping for a bit (it was a day) you could stay on the boat or get off. One year I stayed on and the next year we got off for a little while.
"Port of call" just means where you get on the boat.
Seven nights is a bit long because we're not sure if my son or husband would be great with being on the sea. My husband gets nauseous easily and it would be better if it were only 3-4 days in case he doesn't feel great.
Thanks for the ideas, I will look into those!

Date: 2013-01-17 03:17 pm (UTC)If you don't mind staying IN Florida, I always suggest the Keys. You can still vacay together, but things can be as relaxed or as exciting as you choose to make them, so you could chill out on the beach while they hit all the attractions, and there is a lively night life if that's anyone's thing, you and dad could have a drink right next door at some swinging little pub while little one sleeps locked up safe in the hotel. Plus some cool haunted tourism, like Robert the Creepy Doll! If you're really adventurous you can hit up tours of the Everglades!

Date: 2013-01-17 03:41 pm (UTC)I was actually on Key West on a stop during my NKOTB cruise last year. I didn't get to see Robert the Doll but I went to a gift shop that had a little minature version of him! I have a pic of it somewhere...remind me to show you.
